I hate to say it, but even 2,000 hp is not all that impressive in a 522ci motor - there are a few 1,500hp sub 400ci small blocks out there. John Meany (the designer of the DFI system) has a 1985 Vette with a 406 that runs pump gas (91 octane) and puts out 1,200hp in street trim.

Well more cubes just means it has the potential for even more power given the same boost as that 406...

I wonder if there is a way to put 1,000 hp to the ground effectively in a streetable car..then again with an engine management system that controls boost I bet its possible.

In a word, yes - but it costs lots. A friend of mine (I probably mentioned this ages ago), owns a pro street 1968 all steel Cougar. It's powered by a 598ci twin turbo'd BBF. The car weighs just over 4000lbs and has gone 8.0/175 on Mickey T block tread tyres.
Aside from it having substantial cubes to play with, the turbos I believe are T78's, which you'd think were relatively big, however, given the size of engine, are quite small, hence they spool up quickly (plus there's anti-lag etc to assist).
Motec engine management takes care of all the ignition, fuel and turbo adjustment during a pass.
Anyway, whilst this motor hasn't been dyno'd, it's been rumoured to make over 1800hp on 93 octane pump gas. This is quite a bit given that the car is fully street legal, and is often driven around the outskirts of London just for the hell of it.
At the moment, depending on what you deem street legal to be (mainly the tyre situation), turbos are the best way to put big horsepower down onto the track, since the power delivery is a lot smoother, and irons out the lumpyness you'd get with a roots blower. If you're using drag radials, you can use the same amount of power but through any of the other power adders available.
The advantage with turbos, which isn't often talked about, is how little they stress the engine. With roots and centrifugal blowers, additional load is put on the motor, particulary the front end, causing unwanted pressure on the crank. With turbos, this is eliminated, the only downside being the occasional boost spiking which can cause havoc (melted pistons, torched cylinder heads, valves etc).
Sorry that waffled on for a bit .

So my thought about it would need a well programmed EMS to handle that kind of power was correct. I bet you could program out alot of boost in the lower gears for traction.

Jesus christ! I went on the Nelson website just so I could download that vid. You think he is accelerating pretty quick, and THEN the turbo's spool up.
The noise is just breathtaking!
