Stock rated it at only 290hp@4400rpms well they didnt say it would run up to 8500rpms! I thought my friends dad was bullshiting when he said he would shift his 69Z at over 8grand with 5.xx gears back in the day.
rebuilt to spec 302DZ motor

I'm actually not surprised, my neighbor used to build all sorts of weird cars, his brother enjoyed making 9k rpm 283s.
I love high revs, I guess a 302 build would be fun if I ever had the funds.

This must have been a race spec DZ302, they were fast stock but not that fast.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense why they would put heads and cams in it that make power to 8500, and not rev it there. That would kill the torque and hp down low.

My dad always said that the old chevy 302's were unstopable. He always said that they were way underated to be used in the IROC (???) racing. He said he remembers the old 302's would run 427's all day once they got off of the line. (i guess thats what happends to a high reving high hp light engine)

The Chrysler 340 is another engine that would turn 8,000 rpm. There have been a couple LS1 302 builds and they make insane power at high rpms.

no thats how they came off the assembly line. My friends dad said they weren't worth shit under 6k. He raced many other Z28's that didnt have the gearing nor reved past 7k and kicked their asses on the street. He worked for GM and got one new. He said his best time was a 12.56 in his manual driven stock camaro back in the 60's. Now think about that. shity 60's and 70's tire tech with a high reving manual. I was at the track last week with a guy in his new C6 Z06 running 12.50's@117mph lol. So yea they are well capable of having 500+HP

That makes no sense why you would make your car perform worse than it could by under reving it.
If they put heads and cams, that were made to rev to 5,000 or whatever the stock rev limit is, it would be faster than a normal stock one that's built to rev to 8,500 but is limited at 5,000.

they only came out with the 302 so they could race against mustangs. It wasn't a normal production z28, i guess the decided to hide secret power for anyone that purchased a 302. Im sure it was known between the 302 guys and chevy just limited to 5000rpms to make it look like it was weaker then the vette and other camaros. when really it was a race engine that would kick the shit out of anything on the streets.
buy your 302 z28
remove the rev limiter
---cheat code enabled--- 530hp unlocked
go drive around smoking anything with 4 wheels
